MOTORISTS in Penang are now more aware of the presence of cyclists on the road, thanks to the ‘Campaign For A Lane’ (CFAL) initiative by the G Club Penang cyclists.

CFAL organising chairman Kenny Theng said motorists and bus drivers were used to seeing cyclists on the road nowadays.

“They are aware that we are here and know how to avoid us.

“We’ve come a long way since the start of our campaign in 2009,” he told reporters at the Ideal Property Group CFAL 8th Edition press conference at the G Hotel in Gurney Drive recently.

It is thanks to G Club that avid cyclists in Penang get to enjoy a 12.5km dedicated bicycle lanefrom Queensbay Mall to Gama supermarket, the car-free zone in Beach Street on Sunday and the BikeonFriday initiative to encourage more Penangites to commute to work by bicycle.

Speaking on this year’s CFAL 8th edition, Theng said the 82km round island ride would be flagged off from the Penang City Park on Aug 28 from 7am.

“We are limiting this year’sparticipation to 3,500 participants. Those who finish the race will be getting a Finisher T-shirt and a medal in the form of a bicycle disc brake.

“The event has somewhat become an international one. This year, 30% of participants come from Penang followed by Selangor while 60 to 74 came from all over the world.

“So far, a total of 3,118 riders have registered for this year’s event,” he said.

Meanwhile, G Club chairman Datuk Dr Lim Seh Guan appealed to non-registered cyclists to give participants a chance to cyclesafely as their logistics and safety measures only catered for 3,500 people.

Registration for the event will close by Tuesday.

Participation fee is RM100 for locals and RM140 for foreigners, excluding GST.
